Balance Wheel
> Commissioned for the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection through the Wisconsin Arts Board's Percent for Art Program
Located at the State Agriculture Building, 2811 Agriculture Drive, Madison, Wisconsin
Balance Wheel represents the integral relationship between the natural world and technology. The sculpture is made of one-inch weathering steel plate, rolled in the shape of a wheel. The surface is cut with landscape images, with the sun and rays at the top and landscape forms toward the base. Images reflect the unity of man and nature, the growth cycle, and the changing seasons. The title references the regulatory aspects of the agency; a balance wheel is the mechanism of a clock or other machine that regulates its movement.
A bronze plaque also created for the site describes the sculpture and includes the life-size image of an American Kestrel in bronze. Often called a Sparrow Hawk, the bird represents the agency's role of performing inspections and investigations, as well as its commitment to ecology and the environment.
