St. Raymond of Peñafort
> Commissioned for St. Raymond of Peñafort Parish, Fall Creek, Wisconsin
Located at E10455 Mallard Road, Fall Creek, Wisconsin
The central theme is the miracle of St. Raymond (1175–1275). At the age of 90, Raymond of Peñafort escapes from captivity on the island of Majorca and sails to Spain by transforming his cloak into a vessel and sail. Canonized in 1601, St. Raymond collected and codified papal decrees, creating a massive work that became the cornerstone for canon law.
A bronze life-size figure of St. Raymond stands atop a six-foot high, 26-inch diameter stainless steel column. His right hand, arm extended, holds his staff, transformed into a mast. Tied to the end of the staff, his cloak sweeps downward, fills with wind, becomes a sail, and merges with water forms beneath his feet. His left hand, outstretched for balance, holds a book that is inscribed Summa de lure Canonico. The likeness of St. Raymond is from a painting by Fra Angelico.
Water flows from the top of the column, under the statue, covering the exterior surface of the column and splashing into the surrounding pool.
