Woodland Spire

> Commissioned for the Applied Arts Building at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie through the Wisconsin Arts Board's Percent for Art Program

Woodland Spire blends river and woodland images with historical, technological and spacial concepts. Imagery includes detailed outlines of birds in flight cut from weathering steel plate. A river form slices through the upper portion of steel as it tapers skyward. A sphere near the lower section is formed by four intersecting circles. These contain forest images that create changing areas of light and shadow as the sun moves across the sky.

Two support arcs connect the upper portion to the base triangle and wrap around the sphere. On the upper edge of one arc sits a life-size cast bronze tree swallow. Two more bronze elements, a white pine cone and a Paleo-Indian flint blade, flank a saw blade at the base of the sculpture.
