FOUNDATION PURCHASES GEHRKE ARTWORK
THE VIEW > UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EAU CLAIRE > 1988
A manganese bronze wall relief designed and cast by local artist Robert J. Gehrke has recently been purchased by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's Beautification Committee. Two Sides of the Same Saltine was also awarded first prize in this spring's Wisconsin ArtsWest, an annual juried competition for regional artists.
The work is a "virtuoso" of the metal casting art, according to Charles Campbell, UW-Eau Claire art department chairman and member of the Beautification Committee.
"The piece is a beautifully cast depiction of stones, feathers, small leaves, crackers and other objects," Campbell said. "Not only is it enjoyable aesthetically, but from an instructional standpoint, the piece demonstrates to students and the public the possibilities of the casting medium."
"The fact that this piece received first place in the ArtsWest show indicates that a juror felt this was a fine work of art," Campbell said. "It's appropriate that we purchase this piece as we're always looking for quality work to add to the university's permanent collection. We're also proud to acquire an outstanding work created by one of our alumni."
This summer the work will be hung in either the Fine Arts Center lobby or in the McIntyre Library, "someplace where a lot of people will pass by and see it," Campbell said.
Gehrke is already well-known on campus as the artist who created Woodland Counterpoint, a bronze relief hanging in Davies Center.
