> Exhibited April 2–8, 1975, in the first of a series of one-week thesis exhibitions by Master of Fine Arts candidates of the University of Cincinnati. The show featured painting and sculpture by Robert Gehrke, and paintings by Tarrance Corbin (1946–2010), at the Alms Gallery of the College of Design, Architecture and Art.
THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER > APRIL 6, 1975
Gehrke might be two artists, as there seem to be no similarities between his paintings and his sculpture. In the paintings he constructs man-made structures against the elements of sky and sea, all in close and cool colors. They are quite moving, the open spaces are overwhelming. In his sculpture, Gehrke combines building materials, two by fours, ropes [and] roofing materials into a series of highly cohesive combinations which seem to be movable if one tugs the right rope. The work succeeds in an area of sculpture which so often flops, and without bringing to mind any artist other than Gehrke. By the way, Gehrke has three paintings in the Art Museum Biennial, deservedly.
