Barbara's Backyard
I knew as soon as I saw this explosion of branches that it was something I wanted to paint. It was a process that was a challenge but also one of discovery. I love the layers of space that emerged and the subtle geometric man-made forms. The swath of grass was perhaps the most difficult area to resolve, for some reason. The thought that this might be a painting about birds did not occur to me for some time, for obvious reasons. But I realized it was about anticipation and hope.
