Observing the Reaction …

References a scene in the 1939 film The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, in which Holmes tells Watson he is trying to discover the note that will annoy and drive away houseflies. Holmes plays notes on his violin while observing the reaction of a number of flies he has trapped. They are inside a bell-shaped glass that he has covered with a small square of paper.
